Aratikaya Raw Banana Masala Fry

I picked up this recipe from the internet while generally browsing, but have made some changes to the recipe and I am sharing the revised recipe here. Do feel free to make any changes and let me know how it turns out so that I can give it a shot myself.


  • 1 large aratikaya/raw banana
  • Oil 2 tbsp
  • A pinch of turmeric
  • 1 large onion
  • Cumin seeds 1 tsp
  • Ginger garlic paste 1 tsp
  • Chili powder 1 tsp
  • Coriander powder 1 tsp
  • Garam masala powder ½ tsp
  • Salt to taste
  • Curry leaves 1 sprig
  • Chopped coriander leaves 1 tbsp

Wash and peel the raw banana. Cut into thin slices. Heat 1 tbsp oil in a nonstick frying pan and add turmeric and the sliced raw banana. Stir, cover and cook until done on a medium flame. In the meantime peel, wash, and chop the onion. Heat 1 tbsp oil in a frying pan and add cumin seeds. When they begin to pop add curry leaves and the cut onion, and fry thoroughly. Add ginger garlic paste, chili powder, coriander powder, salt to taste, and garam masala. Fry for a minute or two. Cool and grind the above fried ingredients to a smooth paste. Add this paste to the raw banana when it is almost done. Mix gently and cook for a further minute or two. Serve hot garnished with chopped coriander leaves.

Note: If garam masala is not available just add an inch of cinnamon, 2-3 cloves, and 2 green cardamoms while frying the cumin seeds and proceed as mentioned.
